Rum Build Guide: Melee Casting in The Magus Circle

Rum is the melee-adjacent mage of The Magus Circle — what player reports confirm, why the extraction sigil gets misread as her spell, and how to run her first build.

FAQ

Who is Rum in The Magus Circle?
Rum is one of the six playable mages. Player reports from launch week describe "Rum's attack spell" — an aggressive, close-range signature that once got confused with the extraction sigil by the game's spell recognizer.
Is Rum a melee mage?
Player descriptions of her attack spell suggest a short-range, in-your-face kit, but her exact role, passive, and skill tree are not yet verified in public sources. This page updates as in-game captures land.
Why is my extraction sigil casting Rum's attack?
That was a launch-week misread: the game's spell recognizer sometimes interpreted the extraction drawing as Rum's attack spell. Draw the extraction shape larger and slower, away from the horde — and make sure you are on the 1.0.2 hotfix, which improved extraction casting.
How do you unlock Rum?
Mage unlock specifics are still being documented. The map select screen tracks Leviathan extraction materials per character, and a fresh save shows a limited starting roster — see the mages roster for what is confirmed.

Who is Rum?

Rum is one of The Magus Circle’s six playable mages, and launch week caught her name in the most involuntary way possible: a player trying to escape a run found the game reading their extraction sigil as “Rum’s attack spell” — repeatedly. That one bug report confirms two things at once. First, Rum exists and fights up close, with a signature shape aggressive enough to resemble the game’s exit portal drawing. Second, her kit has a distinct visual identity, because the recognizer can confuse the two.

Her exact passive, ability, and starting spell name are still pending in-game verification — this page grows as they are captured, the same way official hotfix notes have already exposed other mages’ kits (Coffee’s potion tutorial, Anchan’s softlocking ability).

How should a first Rum run go?

Until her numbers are verified, structure her first run around what the melee-adjacent label implies:

  1. Expect to be closer to the Tide than you want. Short-range kits live and die by positioning — the drawing guide covers casting while kiting, which is the survival skill that matters most here.
  2. Feed one spell your early upgrades. Level-up cards scale a single spell hard; a focused path buys you the damage to stay out of arm’s reach later.
  3. Respect the extraction window. If the game can misread Rum’s own spell as the exit, the reverse is also a risk — when the Leviathan falls, draw the extraction shape slowly and large, away from stragglers. The Leviathan guide has the full extraction sequence.
  4. Turn on the comfort settings. Time-slow while drawing gives melee kits the most value, because your drawing windows are the most interrupted.

What do we actually know about her kit?

Only what public sources support, which today is:

Fact Detail Source
Playable mage One of the six characters the game ships with Official store page
Distinct attack spell The spell recognizer once read the extraction sigil as “Rum’s attack spell” Launch-week player report
Per-character extraction Rum needs her own Leviathan extraction for the unlock grind Official map-screen text

Everything else — passive, ability cooldown, skill tree, whether she heals — lands here when it can be verified in-game. The all-mages roster keeps the running comparison table, and the beginner guide covers the run loop her kit lives inside.

Why write a Rum page this early?

Because the search intent already exists: players are choosing between the mages the game hands them first, and two of those picks (Milk and Rum) are the ones launch-week players talk about most. A page that says “here is everything verified, here is what is still open, come back when the numbers land” beats a page of invented stats — the same discipline the spell list applies, and for the same reason: one fabricated number costs more trust than ten honest TODOs.
