FAQ

How many bosses are in The Magus Circle?
The official store page promises "colossal bosses" across four unique planets, with the Leviathan confirmed as the extraction boss. Individual boss names beyond the Leviathan have not been published in official material yet — this page updates as encounters are verified in-game.
Do bosses in The Magus Circle have health bars?
Yes. Official screenshots show a dedicated boss health bar running along the bottom of the screen during a coastal boss fight, separate from the XP timer and kill counter HUD.
What happens after you beat a boss in The Magus Circle?
For the Leviathan, the fight flows into extraction: you draw the extraction sigil and survive a channel while extra enemies spawn. Beating every map also unlocks the "Defender of All Worlds" achievement.
Why does the game lag after a boss fight?
Launch-week players reported severe FPS drops after boss kills. The 1.0.2 hotfix optimized mana motes that caused "massive lag hitches," which may be related — update to the latest build before troubleshooting your hardware.

How do boss fights work in The Magus Circle?

Bosses are the punctuation marks of the run loop: you fight through the Tide’s escalating horde, then a colossal boss arrives with its own health bar and a much less forgiving agenda. Official screenshots show the shape of the encounter — a dedicated boss health bar runs along the bottom of the screen while the normal HUD (timer, kills, XP bonus) keeps ticking, and spell effects stack up to meteor-shower intensity.

The signature difference from other survivors-likes is what happens after the health bar empties. For the Leviathan — the game’s centerpiece boss — the kill is not the end: you immediately draw the extraction sigil and defend a channel while bonus enemies swarm. Our Leviathan guide covers that endgame in detail.

Which bosses are confirmed at launch?

Official material names exactly one boss — the Leviathan — and promises more:

Encounter What is verified Source
The Leviathan The extraction boss; defeating it drops materials tracked per character on the map screen; grants Leviathan-tier upgrades like Supernova Official map-screen text + player reports
Per-planet colossal bosses “Battle hordes of foes across 4 unique planets to face off against colossal bosses” — plural bosses exist, one presumes per planet Official store page
A tentacled sea boss Official screenshots show a massive tentacled creature attacking a coastal map, boss bar active Official store screenshots
The final mission’s opposition A “Final Mission” exists (players report its bugs), implying a final boss or boss sequence Player bug reports + official hotfix

Everything beyond the Leviathan is being verified in-game before we name names — a boss roster full of guesses would be worse than a short, honest table.

What should you know before your first boss fight?

  1. The fight does not end at zero HP. Leviathan kills flow straight into the extraction channel — keep a heal plan and an escape lane ready. The confirmed healing options (heart trees, potions, the kill-based level-up heal) are in the beginner guide.
  2. Clean drawing matters more under pressure. Boss arenas are where the lightning penalty hurts most, because everything moves faster. Assist modes and time-slow settings earn their keep here.
  3. Expect performance dips. “Severe FPS Drop Post Boss” was a launch-week thread staple; 1.0.2’s mana-mote optimization targeted the worst stutter. If a boss kill tanks your frames, you are not alone and it is not your GPU.
  4. Bosses are per-character homework. The Leviathan material tracker has six slots — one per mage — so every character repeats these fights. Rotating early keeps the grind spread evenly across the mages roster.

How do bosses connect to progression?

Boss kills feed three systems at once: materials (extraction currency toward mage and planet unlocks), upgrades (Leviathan-tier rewards like the Supernova split beam), and achievements (“Defender of All Worlds” for beating all maps sits at 0.1% in launch week — the long tail of boss completion). Where each boss’s difficulty lands, and which spells melt them fastest, is exactly what the tier list will rank once the 1.0 meta settles.
