FAQ

How many playable characters are in The Magus Circle?
Six mages are playable, per the official store page, each with their own skill trees, abilities, and "emotional baggage." The map select screen tracks Leviathan materials collected per character, and one launch achievement requires unlocking all of them.
Who are the mages in The Magus Circle?
Milk, Matcha, Coffee, Chicha, Rum, and Anchan. The names appear across official hotfix notes (Matcha, Coffee, Chicha, Anchan), official screenshots (Milk), and launch-week player reports (Rum).
How do you unlock more mages in The Magus Circle?
Defeat a Leviathan, extract from a run with its materials, and the map select screen tracks that material per character. Specific unlock costs per mage are still being documented.
Which mage should a beginner pick first?
Whichever you have unlocked — each starts with one signature spell whose sigil you will practice most. Learn that single shape deeply before spreading mana across a wider spell bar.

Who are the six playable mages?

The Magus Circle casts you as one of six mages defending “humanity’s greatest ally” — and the official store page promises each brings their own skill trees, abilities, and emotional baggage. All six names are now confirmed from official sources and launch-week player reports:

Mage What we can verify today Confirmed via
Milk The blonde, bunny-eared witch seen throughout official art and the mansion hub; her death scene (“…I died.”) even leaked via a player screenshot Official screenshots + player media
Matcha Has a battle-start dialogue, a story act 3, and a nervous, panicky personality per one player’s impression Official 1.0.2 notes + player reports
Coffee Runs the potions tutorial in the mansion (“Coffee got tired of teaching players about potions” — Day 1 patch) Official Day 1 patch notes
Chicha Tied to the mansion’s recipe system — the “Dark Chicha recipe” is linked to a radish ingredient Official Day 1 patch notes
Rum A mage with an attack spell distinct enough that the extraction sigil was once misread as it Launch-week player reports
Anchan Has an active ability — notable enough that its softlock was a day-one fix target Official 1.0.2 hotfix notes

How do you unlock the whole circle?

The map select screen states the requirement in plain text: “Extract with the Leviathan material on each character.” In other words, every mage has to personally escape a run carrying Leviathan parts before the next planet fully opens up — the picture on that screen shows six collection slots, one per mage. The rarest character achievement, “Everybody is Here” (unlock all playable characters), sat at 0.1% in launch week, so expect the full circle to take real farming.

Specific per-mage unlock costs are still being documented — the in-game economy shows a pink-gem currency (a fresh save displays 300) and mansion services priced in it.

What separates the mages from each other?

Three layers, per the official description: skill trees (long-term specialization), abilities (active cooldown skills — Anchan’s is confirmed to exist, since it could softlock the game before 1.0.2), and starting spells (the sigil you will draw most in your first minutes). There is also a personality layer the game takes seriously: the story asks you to “explore the manor, get to know your fellow mages,” and players are already quoting character quirks — Matcha’s nervousness, Coffee’s potion lectures, the “sass from Curio.”

Because every mage starts with a different signature spell, your first hours with each character are really about that spell’s shape. The drawing guide covers how the recognition works, and the spell list tracks what each starting spell does.

Which mage should you pick first?

Honest answer for launch week: the one you have unlocked, ideally the one whose starting spell shape feels comfortable to sketch under pressure. Two things we can say with confidence:

  1. Milk is the face of the game. She appears in the tutorial flow, the mansion hub, and the credits illustration — if there is a default starting mage, all signs point to her. Our Milk guide goes deep once her kit numbers are captured.
  2. Rum is confirmed melee-adjacent. Players describe a “Rum’s attack spell” that the extraction sigil can get misread as — an aggressive, in-your-face kit compared to the casters. Our Rum guide collects what is known.

For everything else — where each mage’s power spikes, which ones carry healing, who pairs best with tarot — the beginner guide covers the run loop those kits live inside, and we will fill per-mage numbers as they are verified in-game.
